Does "No" Really Mean "Yes"?

In the course of a relationship, a couple might engage in sexual intercourse. In a perfect world, they would both agree to it and be able to stop anytime they liked. We are not in a perfect world. Many people are forced to participate in sex, and it can often be violent. This rape is most common between people who do not know each other, but can be between two people who are already in a relationship. In the novel, Song of Solomon  by Toni Morrison, First Corinthians, the sister of the main character, Milkman, is in a relationship with a man named Henry Porter. One night, he takes her to his house and they lie on a bed together. Then Porter "turned over and parted her legs with his" in an attempt to start sexual intercourse. Seeing where this was going, and feeling very uncomfortable with it, Corinthians says "No", four times. To this, Porter replies, " Oh, yes. This is for you", and goes on to rape her.  Some may say that this wasn't rape, and...

Is Magic Real?

Many people have asked themselves that question. The truth is, there is an equilibrium where the two meet. It is called magical realism. It is a literary concept used to convey real themes with the use of magical ideas. The book, Song of Solomon , by Toni Morrison demonstrates the use of magical realism in many different ways throughout it's pages. He says, "When the woman got near, the neighbor called out howdy and soon's  she said the word, the woman turned into a white bull" (Morrison 110). Morrison uses this example of !magical realism to educate the reader about the whoiye oppression in society. In the text, Freddie goes on to say that his mother ...

Keep Dreaming...Or Not

Everyone always says that we can do anything if we put our heart to it. This may be true, but it is conditional. There are many things an individual must do and countless things that need to happen in order for a dream to come true. The situation has to be exactly right. Sadly, this doesn't happen much. We shouldn't just expect dreams to come true, even if we work hard towards them. In the classic, The Great Gatsby, one of the main characters, Jay Gatsby, had a dream. His one wish was for Daisy, another character, to fall in love with him. The only problem was, she was married. Sure, they could have had an affair (her husband was in one), but that would have devalued the relationship in Gatsby's eyes. So, in an attempt to catch her eye, he asks Nick, the main character, to help him set up a meeting between him and Daisy. He offers Nick many things, obviously in desperation, in hopes that Nick will agree. Jordan Baker, Nick's girlfriend describes what Gatsby said,...
