Everyone always says that we can do anything if we put our heart to it. This may be true, but it is conditional. There are many things an individual must do and countless things that need to happen in order for a dream to come true. The situation has to be exactly right. Sadly, this doesn't happen much. We shouldn't just expect dreams to come true, even if we work hard towards them.
In the classic, The Great Gatsby, one of the main characters, Jay Gatsby, had a dream. His one wish was for Daisy, another character, to fall in love with him. The only problem was, she was married. Sure, they could have had an affair (her husband was in one), but that would have devalued the relationship in Gatsby's eyes. So, in an attempt to catch her eye, he asks Nick, the main character, to help him set up a meeting between him and Daisy. He offers Nick many things, obviously in desperation, in hopes that Nick will agree. Jordan Baker, Nick's girlfriend describes what Gatsby said,"'he wants to know,' continued Jordan, 'if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over.'"(Fitzgerald 78). This is a blatant attempt from Gatsby to try and win Daisy over. Even after he tries very hard to get her to fall in love with him, it doesn't happen, we'll find out later in the book. His dream is crushed. He tried so hard but he couldn't influence fate.
Another example is from someone I know. This person also really liked someone, and thought that they liked them back. After three years of going on like this, out of the blue the second person found someone else. It broke the first person's heart, and made them feel like they had been played for a fool. The person didn't even find out about the new relationship until they saw the other person talking to the new person. The first person thought that their dream would become a reality soon, but found that that wasn't how life worked. Your dreams will crush you in the end. So don't "Keep Dreaming". It will not happen.
