The Dumb Blond

We all have heard, one way or another, a dumb blonde joke. Maybe you were the one to say it. Or maybe you were that unfortunate blond that had to be subjected to such a thing. Either way, this is a well known stereotype, and should be ended.

So the question that everyone has, but no one ever bothers to answer is, are blondes actually dumb? The answer, put simply, is no. A study of 10,878 white women with naturally blond hair concluded that blondes had an average IQ within three points of brunettes and other hair colors (Ohio State News). This study shows that, without a doubt, blondes are not statistically dumber than other people.

Sadly, even though this is such an obvious fact, many people still are biased when it comes to judging someone's intelligence based on blond hair color. For example, Jay Zagorsky, a lead researcher at Ohio State University, says that "Research shows that stereotypes often have an impact on hiring, promotions and other social experiences". Despite knowledge that proves blondes are no dumber than the rest, people continue to criticize blondes for something as stupid as hair color.

Being a blond, I have been at the wrong end of many jokes about hair color, and know how they can hurt. They can make you feel, stupid, moronic, and as the name implies, dumb. Well, I am here to tell all blondes that it doesn't matter what color hair you have. As the cold, hard facts prove, you are smart. You are intelligent. You are blond.

Sometimes Being Nonlinear is a Good Thing

When trying to properly express respect to those who served and died in a war, using a nonlinear narrative is better than say, a cenotaph. While cenotaphs are great for war memorials, and give us a place to go to remember those who died, there is one thing they lack; details. In a nonlinear narrative, you get to see everything that happened. You get to walk a mile in the soldier's shoes. You get to see what they saw and hear what they hear. Most of all, you get to share in their triumphs, and struggle with them during their losses. With a cenotaph, all you see are names and stone. The novel, The Things They Carried , by Tim O'Brien, is an example of a linear narrative that helps an average citizen understand what the lives of the soldiers were like.
